Man City have ‘interest’ in left-back ‘revelation’ with more dribbles than Sterling and Mahrez

|

Voetball International say Manchester City have an ‘interest’ in Gabriel Gudmundsson who has been a ‘revelation’ at FC Groningen. The 21-year-old has been a regular under Danny Buijs and might be granted a departure this summer as his contract is up next year.

Pep Guardiola has Benjamin Mendy and Oleksandr Zinchenko at left-back, but he dropped Mendy after losing faith in the 26-year-old while wanting to upgrade Zinchenko in January, so a replacement might be brought in. VI add that City will have to battle RB Leipzig, SSC Napoli and Borussia Dortmund to sign Gudmundsson, however.

The Sky Blues have been linked with Nuno Mendes, Robin Gosens, Nicolas Tagliafico and David Alaba, but Gudmundsson looks a good player. He joined Groningen from Halmstads BK in 2019 and has gone on to make 30 appearances in all competitions, scoring two goals and supplying five assists (Transfermarkt).

Gudmundsson has made 19 Eredivisie appearances this season, creating 17 chances, winning 25/33 aerial duels, making 54 successful dribbles, blocking 24 crosses/passes/shots, making 29 clearances and averaging a tackle (38) or interception (14) every 26 minutes (WhoScored), so he’d be a great addition to the City squad.

The fact Gudmundsson has made more dribbles (one every 25.5 minutes) than Riyad Mahrez (one every 38.8 minutes) and Raheem Sterling (one every 36.1 minutes) from left-back shows how deadly he could be under Guardiola.

Time will tell if City make a move, however, as VI say no suitor has made a concrete bid.

In other news, Man City must pay £21.4m for Pau Torres who’s been dribbled past less than John Stones and Ruben Dias
