Report: Man City player agrees ‘substantial reduction’ in wages to join ‘friend’ in Spain

Sergio Aguero is leaving Manchester City at the end of the season and Beteve say he’ll agree a ‘substantial reduction’ in wages from £12m-a-year to €5m-a-year (£4.3m-a-year) just to join his ‘friend’ Lionel Messi at Barcelona.

The Catalan giants are in financial difficulty which hasn’t been helped by the loss of revenue due to Covid-19, so they’re having to find cost-effective alternatives to strengthen the squad.

Aguero has made 388 appearances in all competitions since joining City in 2011, scoring 258 goals with 74 assists. He’s only scored four goals in eight starts across the board this season but has spent more of the campaign sidelined with injury.

Aguero is out of contract in a matter of weeks and won’t be renewing his deal at the Etihad Stadium, so he’s free to speak to other clubs. There has been interest from Atletico Madrid and Chelsea, but a move to Barcelona would allow the 32-year-old to join up with Messi, his Argentina teammate.

The two players are reportedly very close and are keen to play together at club level, so Aguero might be the reason Messi stays at Barca this summer. His farewell appearance at City could be the Champions League final in nine days, but it remains to be seen when Barca will officially confirm his transfer.
