Yangel Herrera was a left-field option for Pep Guardiola when Fernandinho’s future was uncertain, but the Brazilian would go on to sign a new contract so Herrera was no longer needed.

A move away from the Etihad Stadium now looks on the cards. The 23-year-old has yet to make an appearance for City and The Sun say he has interest from Leeds United, Southampton and West Ham United, so a Premier League switch is possible.

Herrera joined from Atletico Venezuela in February 2017 and has spent the last four years out on loan – New York City FC (February 2017 – December 2018), SD Huesca (January 2019 – June 2019), Granada CF (July 2019 – June 2021) – impressing with the latter.

Herrera’s form at Granada caught Guardiola’s eye, but Fernandinho’s contract extension may have killed his chances of playing for City. The 23-year-old ball-winner should land on his feet with another top-flight club, but fans will never know if he could have cut it in Manchester.

Although he has four years left on his contract and could join another club on loan, the interest from so many clubs suggests a permanent move will be on the table.
