Player closing in on £39m move to Tottenham after Man City passed up opportunity

|

Manchester City sold Pedro Porro to Sporting for £7.6m last summer and the 23-year-old has enjoyed a fantastic season in Portugal. Porro was outperforming Kyle Walker and Joao Cancelo earlier in the campaign and was attracting interest from a host of European giants, so his future looked bright.

City weren’t short of options at right-back earlier in the winter transfer window, so they had no need to bring Porro back to the Etihad Stadium, but Joao Cancelo’s impending departure has come at a bad time.

According to Sky Sports, Tottenham Hotspur are closing in on a £39m deal for the Spanish international after making a breakthrough in talks. City have passed up the chance to re-sign the right-back, but they will land themselves up to £8.5m due to a 30% sell-on fee.

Porro can’t have been thrilled that Pep Guardiola overlooked him for years, so he might not have wanted to renew acquaintances. Nevertheless, City’s loss is Tottenham’s gain, so it will be interesting to see how he fares in the Premier League if the deal gets over the line.

City might be a little gutted that his value has risen so quickly…
