Report: Man City ‘probe the ground’ for £25.7m replacement for suspended player

|

Benjamin Mendy has been suspended by Manchester City after the Crown Prosecution Services brought charges to him, so he’s currently in custody until his trial.

This means the Premier League defending champions are left with Oleksandr Zinchenko and Joao Cancelo to call upon at left-back and only one of them is a natural in the position.

City were linked with Nuno Mendes, David Alaba, Nicolas Taglifico and Robin Gosens over the summer when Mendy’s future was uncertain, and Calciomercato say they’ve ‘probed the ground’ again for a replacement – Gosens.

The 27-year-old joined Atalanta BC from Heracles Almelo in 2017 and has gone on to make 155 appearances in all competitions, scoring 29 goals with 21 assists. Gosens has been prolific in his last two seasons, contributing 17 goals from 34 Serie A games in 2019/20 and 19 goals from 32 Serie A games in 2020/21.

It’s easy to see why City are keen and Calciomercato say they could land his signature for €30m (£25.7m), so he won’t break the bank. Leicester City, Juventus, Barcelona and Inter Milan are also keen, however, so the Sky Blues have stiff competition.
