Stats show why Man City want to sign 26 y/o from PL rivals this summer [Opinion]

James Maddison looks on his way out of Leicester City this summer as his contract at the King Power Stadium is up in 2024. The 26-year-old has little intention of extending his stay, so Leicester are expected to cash in while he still has value.

Manchester City re-emerged as suitors for Maddison, with Pep Guardiola being unhappy with the goal output of his existing midfielders Ilkay Gundogan (1 goal and 0 assists in last 13 PL games) and Bernardo Silva (1 goal and 0 assists in last 11 PL games), but is Leicester’s playmaker good enough?

Maddison has made 14 league appearances in all competitions this season, scoring seven goals with four assists. The England international would be joint-2nd in Man City’s squad for goals (7), 3rd for assists (4), 2nd for chances created (2.2 per game), 2nd for fouls won (2.3 per game), 4th for accurate crosses (0.8 per game), 2nd for tackles (1.8 per game) and 2nd for shots (2.9 per game), so he’s outperforming most of Guardiola’s star players.

It may not be so farfetched that City make a move for the attacking-midfielder considering how well he’s performed in the Midlands, so Leicester will have to brace themselves for offers in the coming months. Maddison wants to play for a Champions League club after all.

In other news, Pep Guardiola should fear losing Rodri to Barcelona rather than Bernardo Silva or Ilkay Gundogan
