What happened to Josh Wilson-Esbrand after impressing in pre-season? [Opinion]

|

Josh Wilson-Esbrand looked set to get playing time in the Manchester City first-team this campaign after impressing in pre-season, but the 20-year-old would go on to struggle for appearances and was recently loaned out to Coventry City.

After Pep Guardiola allowed Oleksandr Zinchenko to join Arsenal last summer, City went into the new season without a natural left-back. Wilson-Esbrand’s form in exhibition games saw him make the matchday squad in the Premier League and Champions League, but he failed to make a start.

The 20-year-old was in the senior squad for two months before being dropped from the matchday squad to play for the U21s, and now he’s been sent to Coventry to continue his development.

Wilson-Esbrand recently said of his move from City: “It is going to be good for me to get minutes here and in the Championship. It will be great to constantly be playing men’s football week in week out.” The 20-year-old made just two appearances for the Sky Blues this season before leaving on loan, racking up more minutes in the reserves.

Wilson-Esbrand has already made his debut for Coventry and will hope to be a regular at the Coventry Building Society Arena for the remainder of the campaign, but it remains to be seen if he has a future in Manchester. Rico Lewis made the step up and is now a regular, but his teammate couldn’t make the cut.
