Erling Haaland ‘will leave’ Man City ‘when he wants’

|

Erling Haaland has taken little time to shine at Manchester City, but his long-term future is in doubt due to the €200m release clause attached to his contract.

Clubs outside of the Premier League can sign the 22-year-old in 2024 if they pay £174.2m, but Paul Robinson doesn’t believe Haaland will be desperate for a departure in two years.

He told Football Insider: “A release clause is neither here nor there. He will leave when he wants to leave. Where else would he want to go, though? He is at one of, if not the best team in the world. I’m sure they are going to win the Premier League and they will also challenge for all of the cups.

“Where else would he want to go in Europe? If anybody could meet his release clause they would do well to find his wages. Not many clubs in Europe could afford him. That is why I think he will be at Man City for the foreseeable future.”

Haaland, who has scored 20 goals with three assists from 14 games in all competitions this season, was on the radar of Real Madrid but ended up choosing City, so Los Blancos are expected to return in the future.

The Norwegian international has deep ties with the Mancunian outfit, having supported them as a kid and having his father playing for them, so he won’t be in a rush to leave.

Haaland has five years remaining on his deal at the Etihad, but Real could be enticing. Los Blancos are the European champions and beat City on route to victory in the Champions League last season, so they’re an upgrade on the Sky Blues.

Real might be signing Kylian Mbappe as Karim Benzema’s long-term replacement too, so they might not even want Haaland in two years’ time.
