Joao Cancelo has left Manchester City to join Bayern Munich on loan until the end of the season, in a move that has shocked many because Pep Guardiola is unlikely to sign a replacement on deadline day, but the 28-year-old has also been singled out for criticism for poor performances throughout the campaign.
Journalist Muhammad Butt said on Twitter: “Cancelo was amazing for two years and then got way way too comfortable with that. He’s been awful this season.” The Portuguese international made 26 appearances in all competitions for City before completing the move to Bayern, scoring two goals with five assists, but the level of his performances had long been wavering.
Cancelo’s hadn’t scored or made an assist in the Premier League since October and started just two of City’s last six league outings due to his poor form. Rico Lewis was starting ahead of the 28-year-old and Kyle Walker on merit, but Cancelo’s attitude was proving to be a problem.
Pep even called out the defender’s lack of application in training and said he needed to improve his body language if he wants to play. But a bust-up followed with the 28-year-old requesting a transfer after frustration over being dropped, so he clearly didn’t take too well to the criticism.
City were left with little choice but to let him leave and may be angered by Cancelo’s conduct as his performances haven’t been good enough.
