Pep Guardiola can’t ignore the left-back problem at Manchester City anymore after Joao Cancelo joined Bayern Munich on loan until the end of the season, so it’s good news that Fabrizio Romano told Caught Offside that the Sky Blues are ‘considering’ a move for a replacement.
Guardiola reportedly ‘appreciates’ Chelsea defender Ben Chilwell, but it remains to be seen if he’ll make a move. City could do with two left-backs as Sergio Gomez has an uncertain future in Manchester after a poor debut season since joining from RSC Anderlecht.
Oleksandr Zinchenko was sold to Arsenal and not adequately replaced while Benjamin Mendy will be released from his contract in the coming months, so City will have lost three left-backs without one coming in. Fulham’s Antonee Robinson is also on their radar, but City will have a lot of names on their list.
Chilwell joined Chelsea from Leicester in 2020 and has gone on to make 69 appearances in all competitions, scoring eight goals with 10 assists. The 26-year-old has made 14/30 appearances across the board this season and hasn’t been holding down a regular starting place (762/2700 minutes).
Chilwell has two-and-a-half years remaining on his deal at Stamford Bridge, so Chelsea aren’t obligated to cash in early, but they may be amenable to a deal if he’s not a regular.
