‘Out of his depth’ – some fans say ‘awful’ and ‘rubbish’ Man City man is the ‘weakest link

Benjamin Mendy was linked with a move away from Manchester City this summer when the Premier League champions had Robin Gosens, Alex Sandro, Nuno Mendes, David Alaba, Nicolas Tagliafico and Gabriel Gudmundsson on their radar, but the 27-year-old looks set to stay until January at least.

Whether Mendy starts many games until then remains to be seen, however, as he underperformed in City’s 1-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday and was singled out by many supporters on social media.

The French international also started in City’s Community Shield defeat to Leicester City on August 7, so Pep Guardiola might be considering a change against Norwich City on Saturday – Oleksandr Zinchenko was a regular last season and did little wrong to lose his place at left-back.

Mendy joined City for £52m in 2017 and has gone on to make 75 appearances in all competitions, but his time at the Etihad Stadium has been tarnished by injuries. Being out for so long has negatively affected the 27-year-old’s form and now City have an expensive flop earning £90k-per-week/£4.7m-a-year that isn’t attacting suitors.

In other news, Man City will turn attention to £67m-rated 111-goal man if they fail to sign Harry Kane
