Mahrez first goal was a low effort from the edge of the box that Alex McCarthy couldn’t get down quickly enough to save. He nearly bagged a second goal minutes later in similar circumstances, but his low effort hit the post and was put in by Ilkay Gundogan.

The 30-year-old did eventually get his brace before the hour mark with a brilliant effort into the bottom corner after taking the ball on the spin in the box and evading a challenge to work an opening. He was fantastic on Wednesday and deserved the plaudits.

Against Southampton, Mahrez played for 60 minutes, had 47 touches, won one aerial duel, completed 87.9% of his 33 passes, created one chance, had three shots with 66.66% accuracy, whipped in one cross which found a teammate and had four successful dribbles (WhoScored).

The Algerian international has made 36 appearances in all competitons this season, scoring 10 goals and supplying five assists. Mahrez has scored and made an assist in five of his last six games, so he’s in a rich vein of form right now (Transfermarkt).
