Pep Guardiola must regret selling 23 y/o with Man City player out of contract in 2024 [Opinion]

Kyle Walker has been linked with a move away from Manchester City as he’s turning 33 in May and has 18 months remaining on his deal, but Pep Guardiola had Walker’s potential successor on the books before selling him for a bargain last summer – Pedro Porro.

The 23-year-old now plays for Tottenham Hotspur, having joined on loan until the end of the season, but he was at Sporting after turning last season’s loan move permanent over the summer. Spurs have a £39m buying option for a player City sold for £7.65m just months ago.

City will bag nearly £10m on account of his sell-on-fee, but Guardiola could have saved himself a lot of trouble if he kept him. Vital Man City noted how the stats show Porro is having a better season than some of City’s fullbacks while being nine years Walker’s junior, so it was a bad business decision to lose an asset when the veteran is in the twilight of his career.

The Spanish international spent three years at City without making an appearance, but he’s now set to forge a Premier League career in North London. Rico Lewis looks to have a bright future at right-back after a breakthrough campaign, but Porro could have been Walker’s successor for many years.
