Manchester City have shown an interest in Darwin Nunez as a potential replacement for Sergio Aguero and Diego Forlan has given a glowing endorsement for the 21-year-old.

Nunez has had a hand in 21 goals from 34 games across the board this season (Transfermarkt) and has been tipped for a ‘big future’ at a ‘great club’ if he makes the ‘leap’ away from Benfica.

Forlan told Portuguese outlet Record: “He is a young player and has a big future. He is at a great European club in Benfica. Obviously, if he continues to produce these numbers and these performances, he can make the leap to a great club, in another league.

“Darwin is a player who has been playing for the national team recently. He scored goals and has played well when he is called by Mister (Oscar) Tabarez.”

The Uruguayan international joined Benfica on a five-year deal from UD Almeria last summer and has gone on to score 12 goals with nine assists in all competitions. Nunez has represented his country four times, scoring two goals, so his future does look bright.

Aguero will eventually need replacing whether he leaves at the end of his contract this summer or stays on for another year, but it remains to be seen if City will make a move for Nunez over the likes of Edin Dzeko, Romelu Lukaku, Ali Akman, Erling Haaland, Lautaro Martinez, Arek Milik and Harry Kane.
